2011 (11505) NOVEMBER whiplash (8) Nov 01 (8) October (700) Jul 31 (1) Oct 28 (5) Oct

The latest announcement at the 2011 Cable Show comes from the seemingly likely pairing of Comcast and Skype, who arranged video calls to enable the cable box. All it takes is a camera, adapter and specially-designed remote 'HDMI-equipped Comcast boxes to turn into Skype-on-TV machines when they start trials in the next few months. Comcast Senior VP Cathy Avgiris told the Seattle Times that the video will max out at 720p start, but will be ugraded to 1080p eventually. whiplash The tie-in will also mean Skype features for the Comcast Xfinity apps on tablets and phones, but according Avgiris it will not "necessarily be limited to three-play" (TV, phone and internet) clients. Skype has already partnered with various TV manufacturers for HD calling in the living room, but works by cable boxes have a much greater whiplash potential installed base. Beyond the still-unanswered questions of the prices and release dates, we have already seen enough Cable Show demos that do not amount to much (* cough * tru2way) so it will go on the shelf with the other until it was spotted in the game.
