If you find that some or all of your Mac OS X user accounts have gone missing / vanished / disappeared from the login and accounts panels but the files are still located on the HDD, then this should help you fix the issue.
Technically this can be done using any Administrator account (if so only Part 2 is required). I chose the root user method because it includes instruction covering the event where all user accounts are missing.
NOTE 4: I have tested this with Snow Leopard. PART 1 – Activate miku hatsune Root User: How to, by Apple: support.apple.com/kb/ht1528 This part can also be done using the Mac OS X installer miku hatsune DVD. PART 2 – Reinstate Missing miku hatsune Users: Log into the “root” user, (or your chosen admin user). Note: To log into the Root User select “Other” and enter root as user-name and the password you set in part 1. Open “System Preferences” then “Accounts”. Create a new User, (by pressing the [+] button). Enter the credentials miku hatsune of the account you wish to reinstate. The name needs to match. Click “Create”. You should get a message “A folder in the Users folder already has the name (account name here). Would you like to use that folder as the home folder for this user account?”. Click “OK” to reconnect the existing files with the new account. If that account has lots of files it may take a few minutes to finish. miku hatsune I suggest you don’t interrupt this process. Some kind of bug. Hasn’t happened miku hatsune to me. But one reason it may occur is if you intensionally delete the account and leave the user directory intact. It’s one of the options when deleting an account. Reinstating the account is possible as described above. Well it did back when I wrote that.
We had a case where McAfee had corrupted the username.plist. This file would need to be deleted before you could create a new account with the same name or else it would say that account name is already in use.
